ROSARY OF THE SEVEN SORROWS
This devotion originated in the thirteenth century.
It recalls the Sorrows of the Virgin Mother of God endured in compassion for the
suffering and death of her Divine Son. The Seven Sorrows Rosary consists of
seven Hail Mary's for each of the Seven Sorrows. One Our Father is said before
each group of seven Hail Mary's, which are separated by a medal. On the three
beads of the rosary at the end; three Hail Mary's are said in honor of the Tears
of our Sorrowful Mother.
The first Sorrow -
The prophecy of Simeon
Simeon revealed to our Sorrowful Mother the agony she was to endure. He revealed
to her that a sword will pierce her Sorrowful Heart as her son, our Lord Jesus
Christ was destined to die.

The second sorrow -
the flight into egypt
Our
Sorrowful Mother is forced to pack up all of her belongings and flee into Egypt
to save her beloved son from the death decreed by Herod.

the
third sorrow - The loss of her son Jesus in Jerusalem
Our
Sorrowful Mother endures every parents worst nightmare as she is separated from
Jesus for three long agonizing days while he is lost in Jerusalem.

The fourth sorrow -
Our Sorrowful Mother meets her son on the road to Calvary
Our
Sorrowful Mother meets her son Jesus on the road to Calvary. She sees him fall a
number of times under the weight of his cross piece. She sees the bloody and
swollen Face of her son as he stands up after falling and smacking his face on
the ground.

The fifth sorrow -
Jesus dies on the cross
Our
Sorrowful Mother agonizes as she watches her only child writhe about on the tree
of shame. She watches him in agony struggling to pull himself up on the cross
just to be able to take a breath and speak to her.

the sixth sorrow -
Mary receives the dead body of her son
Our
Sorrowful Mother cries uncontrollably as she holds the lifeless bloodied body of
her only child for the last time. Her stomach is in knots and her heart feels as
if it is being torn from her chest.

the seventh sorrow
- the burial of jesus
Mary's heart is sorrowful as she helps wrap the lifeless bloodied body of her
only child in a clean shroud. Then watches bravely but sorrowfully as the stone
is rolled to seal the tomb in which her only son was laid.
